Beyond the Label: Myths About SPF Protection

It’s no wonder SPFs are the subject of countless articles about ‘myth-busting’ when there are so many misconceptions surrounding them. It makes sense: How can the function or performance of a product with such variation in its capability to protect our skin from burning, ageing, DNA damage and oxidative stress, be reduced to a single number? It’s a minefield out there but we are here to decode what sunscreen labels say — and what they don’t — so you know what to be aware of when you’re shopping for sun protection.

  1. Know Your SPF

What is SPF? The Sun Protection Factor (SPF) refers to the level of protection against one type of radiation from the sun (UVB rays) which causes the skin to burn. Today, we know the skin needs defending from much more than sunburn. That’s why our sunscreens also protect against ageing from UVA rays, environmental DNA damage caused by infrared rays or blue light and pollution. If you're shopping for a sunscreen with only SPF in mind, you — and your skin — are already at a disadvantage.

  1. Look Beyond the Label

It’s what’s inside that counts! European Commission regulations don’t recognise SPFs between 30 and 50, so two of our sunscreens offer higher protection than the number on the label indicates. The quality and level of sun protection remain the same (and the labels haven’t changed in North America), but in the UK and European markets, the packaging now says:

  1. Do Your Research — Not All Sunscreen is Created Equal

Choose your sunscreen wisely because some offer more varied protection than others. Case in point: All AlumierMD sunscreens provide high-performance protection via a unique triple-defence approach, unadvertised on the box. The mineral sun protection comes from zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, which remain on the skin’s surface where they are most effective. Meanwhile, antioxidants protect against environmental damage, and hyaluronic acid and niacinamide prevent dehydration. Not all sunscreens have you this carefully covered!

  1. Boost Your SPF

Exciting cutting-edge advancements mean AlumierMD Clear Shield Broad Spectrum SPF 30 and Sheer Hydration Broad Spectrum SPF 30 (in untinted and versatile tints) protect against much more than burning. They now defend you against:

  • Pollution

EXO-P™ forms a breathable, biomimetic shield which traps particulate matter from pollution before it enters the skin. Pollution particles from car exhausts and industrial facilities can be a fraction of the circumference of a hair strand and penetrate the skin barrier, often triggering water loss, skin sensitivity and signs of ageing.

  • Infrared Radiation

ELIX-IR™ is a knotgrass extract that helps protect the skin against some of the damaging effects of infrared radiation which can over time contribute to photoageing and increase the risk of skin cancer. It also boosts firmness and reduces the appearance of fine lines.

  • High-Energy Visible Light (AKA Blue Light)

PHYSAVIE is an innovative plant extract that reduces damage caused by High-Energy Visible Light (HEV) or ‘blue light’ emitted from screens and the sun. It may contribute to skin ageing, discolouration and damage that leads to sensitivity.
